Mardi Gras Maddness 2007

On tuesday morning, we ventured down to St. Charles with our camping chairs and cooler, set up our little space on the "neutral ground" (median, to those of you in Wisconsin), and enjoyed the mardi gras bead-catching and parades

After the "truck parade", during which 63 semi trucks decorated in various themes travel the parade route throughout the city, littering the streets with as much Mardi Gras crap as possible,
we headed down to Bourbon Street to take in the official Mardi Gras scene. While it was only 4pm, the street looked like this...

Continuing in my adventurous spirit of the year, I splurged and bought a $4 mask to wear for the festivities. We only lasted until around 5:30, when we headed home to let the dogs out. Despite our good intentions to eat dinner at home, rest, and then head back out on the town for more fun, we emptied our bags of Mardi Gras Goodies on the kitchen table, crashed on the couch, and passed on our opportunity for more of this year's Mardi Gras Maddness.

One down, two to go!

Well, We've done it!!!! We've finished our first project of installing wood floors in our computer room! I was a bit concerned after the first full day of work, and especially concerned over the course of the next week, when we were still literally limping from all the sore muscles.... but we finished up the molding today and we're ready to move the furniture back in. Here's the finished product.....

Atlanta trip

Last fall, we met Jamie and Jeremy in Atlanta for a baseball game and had a great weekend.

Our Home

For those of you who haven't made it down to visit us, here are some pictures of our home here in Louisiana. We put in the patio in the back yard, and did most of the painting in the house. Sometime soon we will replace the countertops in the kitchen, and install a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. For now though, we are working on removing the carpeting in the bedrooms and putting in wood floors.

Carnival 2007

Yes, it's Mardi Gras time again. Time for eating King Cake, watching parades, wearing costumes (I was adventurous and bought a wig this year), and catching pounds of cheap, useless plastic beads which everyone goes crazy over. I can't say I really understand it, yet I'm a willing participant every year.

Christmas 2006

For Christmas, we visited Mora, Minnesota. We were very thankful that we had nice weather while we were there, and it wasn't too painfully cold.

Volleyball New Orleans Style

Jeff and I play in sand volleyball leagues at a bar in downtown New Orleans. These are pictures from a tournament last fall. The tournaments theme was All Saint's day, dress as your favorite Saint. We didn't do costumes, and most of the costumes came off during the actual games.

Artistic Expansion

Since moving to New Orleans, I have continued to work on several stained glass projects. I have also taken up painting, both in oils and acrylics. While I'm still learning a lot about both arts, I think I'm progressing pretty well. If you'd like to see some of the other projects I've done, please feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to share some other photos with you. ~jen

Let the Renovations Begin

We have decided to do away with all the carpeting in our house. We are now working on our first major project in the house (I don't consider painting a major project anymore... we've gotten really good at that with our first home in Wauwatosa and continued our painting extravaganza in our home here), installing new wood floors in all the bedrooms. So far, it's going well, though it's taking us a lot longer than I expected due to some molding issues around the closets.

Drama in 2005

The summer of 2005 brought a lot of stress for us in New Orleans with the arrival of Hurricane Katrina. Thankfully, our home didn't flood, and we had minimal damage to our roof. Following the storm, we moved to Baton Rouge for ~3 months while the city tried to piece itself back together. Thanks to Jeff's employer, we were able to rent a reasonable 2 bedroom apartment that allowed pets the week following the storm. We stayed in Baton Rouge until around Thanksgiving, when I moved home to Metarie. Jeff stayed in Baton Rouge until Christmas time, when we officially gave up the apartment and moved everything back to our home.
While we were very fortunate to come out of the storm with our home and jobs intact, some of our friends that we had made here in New Orleans were not as fortunate. Our friends Courtney and Aaron have now moved to Auckland, New Zealand, and seem to be very happy there. Our friends Meg and John lost everything in the storm, and have moved to Portland, Oregon to rebuild their lives.

Drama in 2006

As you may already know, 2006 was a rough year for our family. In January, my parents were nearly killed in a head on collision while driving from New Orleans to Wisconsin after the holidays. It's truly amazing that they survived the accident. Here are some photos of their car.

MATTOON - A two-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon resulted in serious injuries to three people, closed Interstate 57 for hours and also led to another crash in heavy traffic on the roadway.
The chain of events began when two cars collided on the interstate just north of the Old State Road Overpass at Mile Marker 188 1/2, according to Illinois State Police.
At 1:35 p.m., a southbound 2006 Dodge driven by Jarrod Curtis, 22, of Carbondale left the roadway when Curtis lost control for unknown reasons, police reported. The vehicle crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes.
A second vehicle, a 2003 Chevrolet driven by Stanley *****, 58, of Menonomie Falls, Wisc., struck the Curtis vehicle.
Although he was wearing his seat belt, Curtis was fully ejected from his Dodge as a result of the crash, state police reported.
Curtis was transported to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center and later life-flighted by helicopter to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Both ***** and a passenger, Sandra *****, 57, also of Menonomie Falls, Wisc., were trapped in their Chevrolet. Emergency personnel extricated the ****** from the vehicle in about 30 minutes.
Both also were taken to Sarah Bush and later transported by helicopter to Carle. Both were wearing their seat belts, police reported.
Citations are pending as a result of the accident.
State police said the northbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about three hours due to the incident.
At 2:45 p.m., another accident occurred in heavy traffic backed up due to the first crash.
State police reported that Miljan Bulick, 22, of Countryside was northbound at Mile Marker 187 1/2 in a 2003 Volvo semi tractor-trailer. Bulick slowed his rig for traffic due to the previous crash.
A 1999 International semi tractor-trailer driven by Donald Coffin, 51, of Leavenworth, Kan., struck Bulick's semi in the rear. Coffin was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, state police reported. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.
The first two-car accident drew vehicles and personnel from Mattoon Fire Department, Mitchell Jerdan Ambulance, Charleston Fire Department Ambulance, Coles County Sheriff's Department and Illinois State Police.
Rescue efforts at the scene required the detour of traffic from I-57 to U.S. 45, leading to heavy traffic along Old State Road and other local roadways.
Many emergency units were on the initial wreck scene for more than two hours, not counting extended traffic control efforts, and cleanup of spilled fuel at the site of the truck collision.

After spending a month in the hospital in Champaign, IL, mom was released and dad was transferred to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. Dad finally made it back home in April, just in time for Easter. Both are now wheelchair free and continuing to recover.

Summer Haircut

After cleaning up hair tumbleweeds for the first 2 years we were here, we finally decided to give Sake her first summer haircut in 2006.

It's all grown back now, but summer haircut time will be here again soon.

Our pups

We don't have any children yet, but our pups, Sake and Baxter, certainly keep us entertained.
